I was privileged to live on acres of conservation land for a time. Working in a studio, I might first study a few reference photos, but maybe not. With a lot of walking and cycling, the scenery becomes part of my inner painting vocabulary. Something happens when I “have at it” after the first realistic layers. Scraping, layering, wiping out, drawing and dripping are all part of seeking the hidden quality of what was evocative in the first place.
